A little different from other book groups, we chose this name after seeing the sculpture outside a library in Nice. In what way are we different? We don’t meet on the same day each month; neither do we read a book per month. As a group, we decide which book we’ll read, looking for something a bit different from the usual. We also plan a few dates ahead to suit the members and we decide how much of the book we’ll read. A short book could be read in a month. Longer ones could take several months. It all depends; every book is different. Often, we find we need time to digest ideas; at others we just need time to get through it. There has rarely been a book which has disappointed.
Here is a selection of what we have read:
War and Peace, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, The Stranger, Midnight’s Children, The Odyssey, Les Misérables.
We have no boundary as to era, original language, fiction or fact. We’re looking for something interesting and which will widen our understanding of history, culture, ideas, etc.
Our future reads are She (H. Rider Haggard), From A Mountain in Tibet (Lama Yes he Losal Rinpoche). Our next meeting is on Tuesday, 2nd June at 10.30. By then we shall have read as far as the end of Ch 12 of "She" ready for discussion and first opinions.
