Our creative writing group currently has 6 members who meet monthly at 10.00 am on the Monday following the Core Meeting. We take it in turns to visit each other’s houses and a very relaxed and informal get together ensues. It is as much a social gathering as it is an opportunity for members to express their literary skills.
We decide on a randomly chosen word from the dictionary at the previous meeting, and then read our submissions to everyone at the meeting. The chosen word can sometimes be difficult or awkward to interpret but we definitely try to put a positive spin on every choice. This was evidenced when the word 'suicide' was the one chosen at random. Members positively turned this challenging word around and used it very effectively.
Each of us has an entirely different, sometimes contrasting way of looking at the same topic, with a wide spectrum of interpretations. Submissions can be anything from a few lines, a poem, a story, funny ditty or lifetime experience. It is entirely up to you what the chosen word suggests.
Some make it romantic, funny, or suspense filled, all with the same topic! We all congratulate each other on our writing and leave feeling inspired! It can be daunting at first to share your work but any new members who wish to join us will be made very welcome and encouraged. No previous experience of writing is needed, just a willingness to take part.
Recent chosen words have varied from Cowl, Opposite, Reptile, Ruin, Loneliness, Yang, Serenade and even Coronation. Please see links below to a selection of contributions from our members.
If this is of interest and you feel you’d like to join us then please contact Jessie, who can give you more information. We would also welcome any prospective members who just want to come along and see and listen to what we do.
