Are you interested in all the variety of art forms and looking at diverse cultures - then the Art and Culture group could be right for you. We are not experts but are fascinated by and keen to learn about the cultures of the myriad of human civilisations that have occurred over the last 10,000 years as well as looking at Art that these civilizations have produced.
The group meets once a month on the 3rd Monday of the month, usually in a member’s house and we discuss the topic set for that month. Members prepare something related to the chosen topic, some might use a Power Point Presentation to enhance the discussion, or we may use a DVD, TV programme, books, even a YouTube clip, or some may just talk about their topic. Don’t worry you will not be pressured to present, you can just come and listen, but by researching an aspect of the topic you will get so much more out of your membership of the group.
Over the past year we have been working through the alphabet to give our topics. Our November 2025 meeting was on Art related to the letter G at which we heard about Grayson Perry`s "Delusions of Grandeur" exhibition at the Wallace collection, cartoonist Giles, interior designers Agnes and Rhoda Garrett, George O'Keeffe, Paul Gauguin, Trevor Grimshaw and two complementary views on Artemisia Gentileschi. A full and diverse programme – and we had to hold over Francisco de Goya to our next meeting! Our January meeting will be on cultures relating to the letter G – and Goya.
If you feel this is something you would enjoy, please contact the group co-ordinator through the contact link at the top of the page or speak to the Chairperson at a core meeting and they will be able to introduce you.
