A little different from other book groups, we chose this name after seeing the sculpture outside a library in Nice. In what way are we different? We don’t meet on the same day each month; neither do we read a book per month. As a group, we decide which book we’ll read, looking for something a bit different from the usual. We also plan a few dates ahead to suit the members and we decide how much of the book we’ll read. A short book could be read in a month. Longer ones could take several months. It all depends; every book is different. Often, we find we need time to digest ideas; at others we just need time to get through it. There has rarely been a book which has disappointed.
We have no boundary as to era, original language, fiction or fact. We’re looking for something interesting and which will widen our understanding of history, culture, ideas, etc.
Having completed and enjoyed She, our next book is From a Mountain in Tibet, by Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche. This is a window into an incredible life. It is the moving memoir of monk Lama Yeshe, from his childhood in Tibet and the gruelling years spent as a refugee in Smye Ling monastery in Scotland, by way of Woodstock-era America. The next meeting is on 1st September and we shall have read as far as the end of chapter 7.
Future books will include The Night Runners of Bengal by John Masters, a tale of the Indian Mutiny.
