Are you interested in all the variety of art forms and looking at diverse cultures - then the Art and Culture group could be right for you. We are not experts but are fascinated by and keen to learn about the cultures of the myriad of human civilisations that have occurred over the last 10,000 years as well as looking at Art that these civilizations have produced.

The group meets once a month on the 3rd Monday of the month, usually in a member’s house and we discuss the topic set for that month. Members prepare something related to the chosen topic, some might use a Power Point Presentation to enhance the discussion, or we may use a DVD, TV programme, books, even a YouTube clip, or some may just talk about their topic. Don’t worry you will not be pressured to present, you can just come and listen, but by researching an aspect of the topic you will get so much more out of your membership of the group.

Over the past year we have been working through the alphabet to give our topics. Our last 2 meetings (June and July 2026) have been about art related to the letter J. We had to spread this topic over 2 meetings as members had prepared so many brilliant presentations that we could not do them justice in just one meeting. As usual, the chosen artists were extremely diverse; Russan abstract artist Alexey von Jawlensky. Welsh artists Joanna Jones, Gwen John and Augustus John,  Welsh sculptor Goscombe John, English modern artist Tess Jaray, Icelandic artist Asgrimur Jonsson and Jupiter (God and Planet) in art. We also had some Inuit culture left over from a previous meeting and some David Chihuly, glass sculptor, that was repeated at special request. Our meetings are never boring! Our next meeting, August 2026, or maybe 2 will be on “J” cultures.
